How to nail an interview.
Fail to prepare and prepare to fail. Our recruitment partner, Georgie has the tea when it comes to interviewing for your dream role.
1. Personal presentation is your personal brand!
Your first impression is your personal presentation and grooming (whether that be virtually or in person) and you get one chance to make it count! I have seen so many amazing candidates come unstuck in this step as they just haven’t paid enough attention to 'dress to impress'. You can never be overdressed, so I would always suggest opting for a blazer with neatly groomed hair, fresh makeup, and nails. In regards to dress code, a great guide is to check out the team in store for direction – they are the face of the brand so whether you are interviewing for HQ or Retail roles this is the best port of call!
2. Research, research and some more research!
A common question candidates often ask is how much research into the brand they should do. While no one is expecting you to be a walking encyclopedia on every brand, you should be prepared to discuss their current collection or signature pieces and the core values of the brand – I would then suggest picking one that you identify most with and can discuss in depth. Another common research point is taking the time to go to as many stores as you can to show that you have experienced the atmosphere in store. This helps demonstrate your genuine interest in the brand and role if you have taken the time to do this.
3. Know your CV
This may seem like an obvious one for some – but not being able to talk to your experience without referencing a document is a really great sign of someone who is engaged in their professional journey. It's important to have a clear understanding of your tenure, responsibilities and the impact you had during your time there, Referencing quantifiable measures is a great way to do this. Ie: I increased sales by X amount by doing XYZ! You should be able to answer questions around this detail that remains consistent with your CV!
4. Prepare questions
This is a common interview tip but one that so many candidates don’t take advantage of! It is so important to have insightful, informed and relevant questions, rather than just asking a question for the sake of it. Remember, this is YOUR chance to show your investment in the role and company and to ask any clarifying questions you have. It is always a great idea to have some pre-prepared questions. One of my favourites is asking the hiring manager what they envision as the qualities/skills of a successful candidate but don’t forget to actually be present in the interview as it is highly likely some of your questions may be answered along the way so be prepared to pivot.
5. Be (true to) yourself!
Again, I am sure some of you are rolling your eyes at this because how does it get more obvious – but once again you’d be surprised! I say this in the context of ensuring that the role is right for you as much as you are right for the role. I have certainly experienced situations where candidates have been so caught up in the excitement and prospect of a role that they focus too much on moulding themselves to meet all of the role requirements, and forgetting to take a moment to reflect on what they want and how the role matches up to that. You are not doing yourself nor your future employer any favours by pretending to be someone you’re not and not asking the right questions for fear of putting the client off. The interview process is as much an opportunity for the client and the role to impress you as it is for you to impress them.
